Oral Care Habits for Dental Hygiene Month
October 4, 2023
October is Dental Hygiene Month, which focuses on raising awareness about the importance of good brushing and flossing habits. Your teeth are supposed to last for a lifetime, but 120 million Americans are missing at least one tooth. Tooth loss is often caused by preventable issues, like cavities and gum disease. Not to mention, your overall health relies on a healthy mouth. Here are 3 ways you can achieve better oral health and wellness by keeping your mouth clean.
1. Brush Your Teeth After Every Meal
Did you know that 92% of adults have had cavities? Although they are common, tooth decay can be preventable. Your first line of defense against cavity-causing bacteria is your toothbrush. It removes food residue and plaque to protect your enamel from erosion.
The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth at least twice a day, if not after every meal. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to clean all surfaces of your teeth and tongue for 2 minutes. You’ll keep cavities at bay while keeping your breath minty fresh.
2. Commit to Daily Flossing
Your toothbrush is effective, but it can’t reach everywhere in your mouth. Plaque and tartar can accumulate in areas your toothbrush can’t clean, like between your teeth. This increases your risk of gum disease, which affects at least 50% of adults. Not only can gum disease lead to tooth loss, but it’s also linked to various health issues, including heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and diabetic complications.
Flossing is the best way to keep your gums healthy. Choose a high-quality waxed dental floss to clean between your teeth every day. Gently slide floss between two teeth and form a “C” shape around a tooth. Slide the floss down to your gum line and back up to the top of your tooth. Repeat this process for every tooth to prevent gum disease.
3. Schedule a Cleaning and Checkup
Besides caring for your smile at home, the American Dental Association suggests visiting your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup. Your dental team will remove any plaque and tartar accumulations. Your dentist will examine your teeth and gums to look for anything concerning.
Preventive dentistry is proven to stop common dental issues from occurring in the first place to preserve your smile. It will also lessen the need for costly dental procedures later.
It’s never too late to commit to good dental hygiene habits. You’ll invest in a healthy mouth and body to look and feel your best.
