Senior with a nice smile

You might have heard about cosmetic dentistry, an expansive field that can do incredible things for patients that are unhappy with their smile. If you have some kind of issue with the way your teeth look, there’s likely a cosmetic treatment out there that could help you get a smile you could take real pride in.

However, patients on the older side are sometimes nervous about the procedure, wondering whether their age could cause complications for the procedure. If you’re curious, here’s what you should know about the prospect of getting cosmetic dentistry as a senior.

Can Seniors Get Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry in general is incredibly low risk, especially when conducted by a trained professional. As a result, seniors don’t have anything to worry about. No matter your age, you should be able to talk with a dentist about any of a variety of cosmetic treatments.

What Kinds of Cosmetic Treatments Work for Older People?

As people age, it’s common for them to see their teeth change remarkably over time. For example, it’s common for seniors to see their teeth gradually become discolored. This is because of the natural thinning of the enamel, one that can potentially expose the darker layers of the teeth underneath the surface.

Such people can take advantage of many different cosmetic treatments in order to improve the color of their smile. Teeth whitening can make a huge difference by removing surface stains from the teeth, while direct bonding and veneers can cover up especially problematic discoloration completely.

Risks of Poor Oral Health

All things being equal, your age shouldn’t have any impact on your ability to get cosmetic dentistry. However, most dentists will refrain from performing any kind of cosmetic treatment if the patient is currently suffering from oral health problems, like gum disease or rampant cavities. Seniors are at a much higher risk for these conditions.

This doesn’t have to delay cosmetic care indefinitely, but it does mean that seniors are more likely to need gum disease therapy, fillings, or crowns before beginning cosmetic treatment. Once this is done, you’ll still be able to get the dream smile you’ve always wanted!
