What Should I Do If I Chipped My Tooth?
February 22, 2022
Have you accidentally chipped your tooth? If so, you’re probably wondering what you should do about it. While the situation may be alarming, it’s best to remain calm and follow a few steps to manage your circumstances while you seek dental care. Read on to learn the four actions you should take if you have a chipped tooth.
Step #1: Visit Your Dentist Immediately
After chipping a tooth, the most important thing you can do is to see your dentist as soon as possible. Even the slightest cracks in a tooth can seriously weaken it and even lead to infections in the long run. Your dentist can examine the issue and check to see if any damage was done to your other teeth. In most cases, they can quickly and easily repair the tooth with a dental filling, direct-bonding, or a veneer if the front of the tooth was chipped.
Step #2: Rinse Out Your Mouth
You should clean out your mouth with lukewarm water after chipping a tooth. This will clear away any dirt or debris from entering the exposed area. If the piece of the tooth is somewhere in your mouth, rinsing will make it easier to come out.
Step #3: Preserve the Tooth (If You Can)
If you’re holding a piece of the chipped tooth, it’s best if you take the time to preserve it. Your dentist may be able to save it or place it back on. After a quick rinse, try to submerge it in milk or saline solution to keep it moist. However, if the piece is still hanging onto your tooth, avoid taking it off yourself. Doing so can lead to more damage and an increased risk of infection.
Step #4: Use a Cold Compress or Pain Reliever
To minimize any swelling that might occur, try to apply a cold compress or a towel with ice to the area of the cheek where the injury took place. The cold temperature will help to slow the blood flow, numbing the spot in the process. You can also take over-the-counter pain relievers if you’re experiencing any complications. However, the most important thing is to not chew or bite with that side of your mouth and causing further damage.
By taking these few measures, you stand a better chance of saving your chipped tooth while remaining as comfortable as possible. Even if they don’t hurt, it’s best to see your dentist right away to keep the tissue from getting worse.
